Palace of the Captains General

La Antigua de Guatemala was once the royal capital of everything from Southern Mexico to South America. The headquarters during that time was the Palace of the Captains General. The Captains General were the official representatives of the King of Spain and ruled in his name.

Here's their palace, which faces Parque Central.

It's a beautiful building, at least from the front. Here's a view through the front porch area.

This passage way takes you to the inner courtyard. There is a major renovation project underway to restore the Palace of the Captains. It will probably take years to complete, which is a good thing because I've been told that they have no idea what they will use it for once it's been restored.

These shots of the inner courtyard show you how much work is left to do.

All we need is a little paint here.

Perhaps some greenery there.

Of course, the most important decision has not yet been made. How large a fountain will we need to put in the central courtyard? Fountains are important things in La Antigua.
