University of San Carlos

This is the entrance to the University of San Carlos.

It was founded in La Antigua in 1675.

Since it was a pontifical university, it was primarily a theological university at that time.

Here's a shot of the inner courtyard. We haven't had time to really tour it, but plan to do so. I wonder if they have any PowerPoint presentations from back in 1675?

Today, the University of San Carlos is the Guatemalan national university. Anyone who meets the entrance qualifications can attend free. I've heard rumors that some students even manage to graduate, but I've seen no proof. Most students who are serious about their studies attend one of the many private universities in Guatemala.
